Getting the most out of Spravato

Getting the most out of Spravato.

The single biggest thing you can do is keep coming: the schedule is the treatment. After that, small things before and after each dose make the sessions easier, and a few habits help the improvement stick.

1. Keep the schedule

Consistency matters more than anything else.

Twice a week for four weeks, weekly for four, then weekly or every other week. The first month sets the pace, so plan your visits around it before you start.

And once you feel better, staying on maintenance treatment matters: in a relapse-prevention trial, people in stable remission who continued Spravato were 51% less likely to relapse than people switched to placebo.1 We decide together when and how to space treatments out.

2. Prepare for each dose

The day of treatment.

  • No food for two hours, no drinks for 30 minutes before your dose. It cuts down on nausea.
  • Need a nasal spray for congestion? Use it at least an hour before your Spravato dose, and tell us.
  • Arrange your ride in advance, so you’re not worrying about it in the chair.
  • Tell us everything you take, including alcohol and sleep aids, which can add to the drowsiness.
3. Settle into the two hours

Make the chair your own.

  • Calm music and an eye mask: bring your own if you like, and we keep eye masks and noise-cancelling headphones on hand for anyone who doesn’t. Many people let the first hour pass with their eyes closed, and someone from our team is always on standby if you’d like company.
  • Comfortable clothes, and a layer in case you feel cold.
  • No agenda. You don’t need to work through anything during the dose. Rest.
  • Speak up if something feels uncomfortable. A clinician is right there.

4. Between visits

Help the improvement take hold.

  • Keep taking your other medications as prescribed, unless we’ve agreed a change together.
  • Therapy alongside Spravato. Many people find that as the fog lifts, therapy becomes easier to use. If you have a therapist, keep going; if not, ask us.
  • Sleep and routine. Regular sleep, daylight and movement support any depression treatment.
  • Notice small changes. Improvement often shows up first as small things: getting up more easily, enjoying something again.
5. Talk to us

Your feedback shapes your treatment.

Tell us how each session went and how the days in between have been. Your dose, your schedule and the support around you can be adjusted, and the more we know, the better we can tailor them.

Tips questions

What people ask about making Spravato work.

How can I make Spravato more effective?

Keep to the schedule, especially in the first month; keep taking your other medications as prescribed; and tell us how each session and the days in between have gone so we can adjust. Therapy alongside Spravato helps many people too.

Should I eat before Spravato?

No food for two hours beforehand and no drinks for 30 minutes, to reduce nausea.

Can I drink alcohol while on Spravato?

Tell us what you drink. Alcohol can add to the drowsiness Spravato causes, and we’ll advise you on treatment days and in between.

What should I bring to my Spravato appointment?

Something calm to listen to and your own headphones if you like (we keep some on hand, with eye masks), comfortable clothes, and the person driving you home.
