Spravato and cannabis

Spravato and cannabis: our advice on treatment days.

We usually don't recommend using cannabis around your Spravato treatment, because it may add to the sleepiness, the detached feeling and the heart rate and blood pressure changes that Spravato already causes for a few hours. If you use it for sleep, the night before a treatment shouldn't be an issue, and the night after is fine too. Being open with us about any use lets us plan your treatment well.

Our advice

Can you use cannabis on the day of Spravato treatment?

We usually don't recommend using cannabis in the hours around your Spravato treatment. Spravato causes temporary sedation, dissociation and a rise in blood pressure, and the label advises extra caution with anything else that affects alertness (Spravato Prescribing Information). Cannabis can add to each of those, so leaving it out around your visit keeps your session predictable.

If you use cannabis for sleep: using it the night before a treatment shouldn't be an issue, and if you need it to sleep on the night after your treatment, that's fine too.

No judgment

Tell us, so we can plan.

Many people use cannabis, and saying so doesn't rule you out. Knowing about it, how often and in what form, helps your clinician plan your treatment and monitoring.

Why it matters

How could cannabis interact with Spravato?

Spravato's temporary effectHow cannabis could add to it
SedationCannabis can cause drowsiness, which may deepen sleepiness during and after the session.
DissociationCannabis can change perception, which may make the floaty, detached feeling stronger or less predictable.
Blood pressure and heart rateCannabis can raise heart rate, on top of Spravato's temporary blood pressure rise.

Other days

What about cannabis on days without treatment?

Talk with your clinician about use on other days. It depends on how often you use it, how it affects your mood and sleep, and the rest of your treatment plan. We'll give you advice that fits your situation rather than a blanket rule.

Other substances

Alcohol and medicines too.

The same reasoning applies to alcohol and some medicines on treatment days. Spravato and your other medications.

Cannabis questions

What people ask about Spravato and cannabis.

Can you smoke weed before Spravato?

We usually don't recommend it in the hours before your treatment, because it may add to Spravato's sedation, dissociation and blood pressure effects. Using it for sleep the night before shouldn't be an issue.

Can you use cannabis after a Spravato treatment?

Not right after your visit. If you use it to sleep that night, that's fine. Talk with your clinician about use in general.

Will using cannabis stop me from getting Spravato?

Not by itself. Tell us about it at your evaluation, and we'll plan around it.
